UNCOVERING OF THE KATIPUNAN

Sir mentioned (and even most of the history books do) that it was Teodoro Patiño who revealed the existence of the Katipunan. However, I’ve read an article which stated that it was Andres Bonifacio himself that directed Patiño to divulge the society’s existence. Bonifacio wanted to hasten the Philippine revolution and block any doubt or opposition from its members so he ordered Patiño to do so.

Classmates, I would like to hear your side on whether there’s a possibility of Bonifacio revealing the existence of the KATIPUNAN.

thank you

  2. How would the knowledge of the existence of the Katipunan "block any doubt or opposition from its members"? What was it that was being opposed that it could be blocked by the revelation of the existence of the movement?

Following this, were their forces prepared and ready to attack that Bonifacio wanted to hasten the revolution?

If Bonifacio wanted to hasten the revolution through revealing the movement's existence, would it not have been better to reveal it himself? Doing it himself would have given the announcement greater credibility and conviction. Why task it to this person?

On a different light, why hasten it? In my opinion, their forces were not ready to attack, nor was it prepared from being attacked.

As to the possibility of Bonifacio revealing the existence of the movement, it depends on the circumstances that he was in, and the factors that would have led him to such a decision.

  3. Bonifacio was not prepared to start the uprising at that point. The Katipunan was still recruiting members and acquiring arms. When it was discovered, the Spaniards immediately launched a repressive campaign. Suspected "filibusteros" were arrested, tortured to testify against others, etc. This prompted Bonifacio to "hasten" the revolution.

  4. I remember that we discussed this in our Kas 1 class before. My Professor pointed out that this isn't true at all, I couldn't find our past references on this, though. To some point, Bonifacio hastened the revolution, but never revealed the existence of the Katipunan.

  5. Has anybody alleged that Bonifacio who "revealed the existence of the Katipunan"? It was the wife of an ordinary Katipunero who revealed it to a priest in a confessional. But when it was already exposed, he publicly launched it in Balintawak (or Pugad Lawin).
